DISD: Any advice for students struggling?
CG: My advice to students who are going through
the same thing as I did - focusing on the party life,
really not caring about school, etc. – don’t give up
on yourself. It may be hard right now or hard at
the moment and you’re stressing and don’t know
what to do, but don’t give up on yourself.
Set a goal – where do I want to be after high
school or in 5-10 years? Get your mindset on
where you’re trying to be in life when you grow
up. Learn to put things in perspective so that you
realize what you’re doing affects family.
See the bigger picture and focus on tomorrow, not
on the moment right now. Just keep remembering
that what happens now affects what happens
tomorrow. Help out a lot of people. Find ways to
motivate yourself. It helped me when I got rid of
friends who weren’t going to help me out, but they
were going to keep me in that bad spot. Now my
friends care about me and want me to succeed.
Realize where you are in life.
My advice and motivation to parents – don’t
give up on your kids. It’s all part of the learning
experience. If they get in trouble with law
enforcement or school, talk about it. Tell them
that if they keep doing this, it’ll keep getting
worse and worse. I got in trouble with the law, got
arrested, and my mom bailed me out. She then
asked me, “Is that what you want to be in life and
to keep going through the same thing? Next time
