Story by Melissa Green and Mario Zavala Jr. Photos by Melissa Green SHARE AND SHARE-A-LIKE Students at Lee Elementary School have taken sharing at lunch to the next level, and in turn are helping classmates through the implementation of the “Sharing Table.” “Everybody throws away their trash at the end of the meal, and instead of throwing that whole piece of fruit or unopened cookie into the trash, they can put that on the shared table,” said Chris Bomberger, director of child nutrition. “That’s really what the program is for – kids who might want one more thing.” Students who have purchased a school lunch and have uneaten and unopened food items at the end of their meal may place those items on the food sharing table. Children who may want additional servings may take an item from the food sharing table, at no cost to them. Items for sharing include unwrapped or packaged whole food and beverages that remain in compliance with local and state health and food safety codes.
