Denton ISD Our Impact In Your Community Magazine Fall 2015 | Page 6

Welcome

By Jamie Wilson , Ed . D . Superintendent of Schools

We hope you find this inaugural issue of

Denton ISD : Our Impact in your Community as a welcome surprise ! The intent of this new communications tool is to tell the story of our students and staff . Our goal is to highlight the numerous successes that are happening daily in our classrooms and on our campuses .
Far too often we only hear the negatives about our nation ’ s youth and public schools . The perils of public education are often bantered during political debates because those involved rarely take the opportunity to learn about the children and people served by our school system .
It is also easy to be critical about the expense and resources used to fund our schools . I would invite you to check out our new report , What We Value , to get a better understanding of the ins and outs of Denton ISD and how we operate .
Our community shared with us through an anonymous survey that students are far more valuable than a score on one test administered on one day . They relayed that they value strong financial practices and a variety of opportunities for our students . We agree .
I maintain that when an organization creates a collaborative culture , high expectations and proven results , leaders in any community will seek to be associated with it . They will also invest in that organization , and ultimately in our community ’ s future .
We have several businesses and organizations connected to our district and our campuses in a variety of ways , so I ’ d like to offer a thank you to our advertisers , many of whom already support our school system through our district ’ s Adopt-a-School program or the Denton Public Schools Foundation . It is because of their contributions and their advertisements that this publication comes at no monetary cost to our school system or to you .
As for success in Denton ISD , we would simply point to graduates like Katelyn Cave , one of this month ’ s features , who performed on Broadway this summer following the encouragement of her Guyer High School theater teacher . Our spotlight on the LaGrone Advanced Technology Complex shares the wealth of opportunities created for our students . The story of the recycling program piloted at Calhoun Middle School features one of the characteristics we hope all of our graduates possess – responsibility . Enjoy this first issue . Don ’ t hesitate to share it with friends and family .
