Medical Center of Lewisville’s Cardiac Care Center The Care You Need... In Your Own Neighborhood By Van McKnight, AVP of Cardio-Pulmonary Services Cardiac Disease is the nation’s number one killer. Americans are at risk due to our societal influences, our lack of attention to proper eating habits, and the prevalence of diabetes and other genetic risk factors — not to mention, the tendency towards smoking and lack of exercise. Cardiac disease has been known for affecting men, but did you know that women are also at risk equal to or at a greater degree than men? In fact, the American Heart Association reports that women suffer more subtle heart attack symptoms that are “atypical” of the signs and symptoms that men experience when having a heart attack. Some women often do not experience signs or symptoms at all before having a heart attack. Women have a tendency to ignore pain or other warning signs that would alert them to seek professional emergent medical attention. In our nation, women die from sudden heart attacks 42% of the time, whereas men die 24% of the time, according to the Women’s Heart Foundation. Medical Center of Lewisville has been working diligently to provide the needed heart healthy programs for our community, and now offers a full-service Cardiac Service Line. This means that we provide emergent as well as scheduled heart procedures. Our Cardiac Care Center, Emergency Department, and Cardiac Operating Rooms, support the existing accredited Non-Invasive and Cardiac Rehabilitation Program which already perform many services for Cardiac Health. The program features the latest techniques for off-pump bypass surgery, cardiac imaging, and outstanding nursing and physician care. When a heart attack or myocardial infarction (MI) occurs, the heart cannot get the required oxygen for proper function. There is a saying in the medical field, “Time is muscle”. The quicker the heart attack causing blockage can be removed, the better the chance of survival. We are on call 24/7 and will respond within minutes to ensure that damage to your heart is minimized. Medical Center of Lewisville’s patient’s first customer service program continues to include on-going community outreach programs and educational topics. Our physicians have been active in the community speaking on topics concerning heart healthy awareness, including techniques used in the Cardiac Cath Lab, Imaging, and Surgical Services departments. Our Cardiologists utilize the latest techniques and equipment to open blocked coronary arteries, ensuring that your heart continues to function properly. Our heart surgeons have an extensive background in Cardiac Surgery, offpump bypass, and other heart surgeries, including valve procedures and arrhythmia procedures. Medical Center of Lewisville is proud to be the first hospital to bring this type of medical care to the local community, supporting patient care right here in our own neighborhood. Patients no longer are required to travel for their heart care. They can access the latest techniques and care right here in Lewisville. The hospital continues to be committed to the improvement of health care in the local community, through our HealthyU program, health fairs and speakers bureau. We have the resources available to support the growing need for community education on heart healthy measures.
