as a ratio: Systolic (the top number) measures the pressure in
the arteries when the heart beats, and diastolic (the bottom
number) measures pressure in the arteries between heart-
beats. Arteries are blood vessels that deliver oxygenated
blood from your heart to your body. Healthy people should
aim for a blood pressure less than 120/80. Any higher dou-
bles the risk of heart disease.
Secondly, you may not need medications.
Though millions more people are expected to be diagnosed
with high blood pressure under the new guidelines, it’s pre-
dicted that only1.9% of those patients will get prescribed
drug therapy to lower their blood pressure. The hope is that
many of those found in the early stages of the disease will be
able to address their hypertension through lifestyle changes
such as losing weight, getting more exercise, changing their
diet, consuming less alcohol and sodium and lowering stress
to name a few. Lifestyle changes are a cornerstone of the new
guidelines and are the first line of therapy.
