Outlook : What Women Can Do to Reduce Their Risk of Developing Heart Disease Unfortunately , heart disease is the number one killer of women in the U . S . Many women , like men , suffer from conditions or make lifestyle choices that increase their chances of getting heart disease . And for those that have heart disease , they continue to increase the likelihood their heart disease will worsen . The good news is that you can control many of the risk factors we ’ ve discussed by making lifestyle changes , taking medicines or undergoing medical and or surgical intervention .
Prevention is the key . If you have not been diagnosed with heart disease , it ’ s important that you get screened by a physician to understand your risk of developing heart disease
and hopefully prevent it from happening .
If you suffer from some medical conditions such as high blood pressure , diabetes , or high cholesterol , get your blood pressure checked regularly , discuss checking your cholesterol and triglycerides with your physician , and talk to your doctor about getting tested for diabetes .
Finally , women can make many lifestyle changes to reduce their risk of heart disease such as not start to smoke ( or quitting if you do ), limiting alcohol intake , making healthy food choices ( that includes whole grains , low-fat or fat-free dairy products , a variety of fruits and vegetables and lean meats ), lowering your stress level , and exercising regularly –– to name a few .
