witch doctors take these kids into the bush and they just never come back,” said Bob. He asked the Chief Justice if he could try one of these cases. The Chief Justice explained there were two problems. Number one, there’s always a victim but they’re always dead and number two, no judge will ever take on that case. What the Chief Justice didn’t count on was a little 8-year–old boy named Charlie. On the way home from school Charlie was abducted, taken into the bush by a witch doctor named Kabi, who cut off his genitals and left him for dead. “But, guess what?” said Bob. “Charlie didn’t die.” Now, Bob had a victim who was alive, he had the most infamous witch doctor in the region, and he had God on his side. He got permission from the Chief Justice to try the case, found a judge on the border of Congo to take it and brought to trial Uganda’s first case ever against a witch doctor and got a conviction. Now, what happened to the little boy Charlie, who was left terribly maimed? As it so happens, Bob is also a pilot, and there was a doctor who was learning to fly. A flight instructor relayed the story of Charlie to the doctor who called Bob at home. “I heard all about this little boy and I can fix him,” the doctor said. Maybe he didn’t hear the extent of Charlie’s condition, Bob thought, and explained to the doctor he couldn’t fix this. “I’m the chief of surgery at Cedar Sinai The next morning he took Charlie to Cedar Sinai. Bob leaned over and gave him a little kiss on the forehead, “Charlie, he said, be not afraid.” But, what happened next is the wildest part of the story. Bob visited Kabi in prison and Kabi, sincerely sorry for what he had done told Bob he needed forgiveness. Although it was difficult, Bob extended Kabi forgiveness and Kabi came to Christ. Love is not just about saying words; true love is always expressed. Medical Center, I can fix him!” he replied. Bob asked what it would cost. “It would be staggering, but don’t worry, I’m going to do it for free,” the doctor replied. On the way to bring Charlie from Uganda to the United States, Bob received an invitation from the White House. They’d like to meet Charlie. After that he took Charlie to Disney Land. “Because any kid who’s going to get that operation needs to go to the happiest place on earth!” Bob said. Bob explained, “Jesus moved toward all the people I want to move away from, because I don’t want to get any on me.” Today, Bob meets with the witchdoctors. They know where he stands, that he will hold them accountable and that child sacrifice is now punishable by death. Yet he is endeared and respected by them. “What if we were the ones who weren’t so afraid anymore?” asked Bob. “What if we just let people know they’re invited?” As I write, I’m reminded of something I recently heard from a man who works with Gospel for Asia. He was an accountant who had a plan to retire with a million dollars in the bank when God wrecked his plan by showing him what he was made for. He said, “I realized I wasn’t made for time, but for eternity.” Recommended reading: Love Does by Bob Goff Connect with Michelle through www.HandOfTheKing.com DENTON COUNTY Living Well Magazine | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016 11
