Denton County Living Well Magazine Fall 2013 | Page 6

From the Publisher Meeting a Legend his issue marks the realization and fulfillment of two important goals of ours. Firstly, it cements the magazine’s transition into a quarterly publication. Now, you can turn to LIVING WELL more often to get the vital information you need to make informed choices about your healthcare and lifestyle choices. As a quarterly magazine, we’re now fully in sync with regular milestones and seasonal activities, which allows us greater flexibility in offering the latest trending topics in a variety of areas that interest you. The second goal fulfilled is of an infinitely more personal nature, but one that would not have been realized without this magazine. As publisher of LIVING WELL, Sam was able to make a dream become a reality for someone who means the world to him––his father. Sam’s dad has long been a T. Boone Pickens fan. Indeed, when posed the question, “Who would you most like to have lunch with?” without hesitation or missing a beat, my father-inlaw’s response was T. Boone Pickens. With this in mind, Sam set out on a monumental quest to help check off one of the items on his dad’s bucket list. As you’d probably guess, getting a lunch date with Pickens, a billionaire entrepreneur and energy king, is no easy feat. After all, you can’t just pick up the phone and invite a living legend out for a bite. But, when Sam sets his mind to the task at hand, well, there’s absolutely no stopping him. After a lot of due diligence, phone calls, and much crossing of fingers, we pitched to Pickens’ people the idea of a feature story on his extraordinary life. For this, of course, we needed to do an in-person interview over––you guessed it––lunch. It was the opportunity we were hoping for, and you better believe Sam’s dad accompanied us on the lunch interview. To see my father-in-law’s eyes light up while chatting with the bigger-than-life Pickens, who at age 85 can still captivate an audience and command unwavering attention, was one of those moments I’ll never forget. And, I know, it was an experience that Sam felt blessed to be able to give to his dad. Now, everyone gets the chance to sit down with Pickens, albeit virtually. Check out his feature story inside and read how Pickens built his energy empire to become the titan of industry he is today. Pickens offers readers insight on how he’s managed to stay sharp and healthy over the years. He also divulges some of the best advice he ever received. Hint: it was from his grandmother. We hope that his story, along with all the other informative articles inside this issue, offer you inspiration in your living well journey. As always, you’ll find additional articles on LivingWellMag.com, where you have access to even more information on issues relevant to your life. From health and wellness to medical news and legal issues––along with yummy recipes––we have a little something for everyone.
