Furthermore, we can obtain
oral maxillofacial radiology
reports and diagnostics. This
valuable information can be
utilized to develop holistic
treatment plans that may
involve surgical collaboration
with ENT specialists. These
images and diagnostic radiol-
ogy reports provide the best
means of communicating with
these specialists and for edu-
cating our patients as well.
Additionally, many patients
are considering various sur-
gical treatment modalities
such as UPPP. They want to
know what we recommend
in relation to these types of
surgeries. We can give generic
answers that don’t serve our
patients’ individual needs, or
with CBCT imaging we can
give completely customized
answers for each specific
patient based on their anat-
omy. This specific procedure,
the UPPP for example, can
be beneficial for some pa-
tients and not others. Patients
whose airways are shown to
be mostly open and wide but
who have excessively elongat-
ed and enlarged uvulas might
benefit from this treatment.
However, if in the CBCT scan
we can see that the patient’s
entire airway is compromised
and compressed all along the
height of the airway down
to the base of the tongue to
the level of the hypopharynx,
this surgery is not going to
be as much benefit (see im-
age). CBCT imaging allows us
to provide these insights to
patients directly and benefit
them with a holistic view of
exactly where their problem
sites are.
CBCT imaging is extremely
valuable for answering the
critical anatomy and pathol-
ogy related questions that we
can’t completely address with
intra/extra oral exams, sleep-
tests or health questionnaires.
