IS EVERY
DORSAL FIN DEVICE THE SAME?
D
orsal fin devices have
been around in the industry
for many years and have be-
come one of the most popu-
lar device styles among sleep
dentists. One of the main rea-
sons is the separated upper
and lower parts, which allow
patients to open their mouth
freely.
There are a number of dorsal
fin devices in the market. How
can a dentist make a decision
on choosing one over anoth-
er? Dallas, Texas based Dr.
Fedosky, with over 10 years
in sleep dentistry, talks about
his experiences with dorsal fin
devices.
Q. What kind of device de-
sign do you prefer, and why?
Dorsal fin devices have been
my go-to appliance design for
the last 4-5 years. I have deliv-
ered approximately 900 devic-
es since.
Patients like the dorsal fin de-
sign for several reasons. Free-
dom of movement is the most
commonly reported advan-
tage, but it is also comfortable
and easy to insert. Another
advantage of the design is that
it allows for vertical opening
while still keeping the mandi-
ble in its forward position.
Many of my patients are using
the Whole You Respire Blue
device. They have tried other
devices in the past but prefer
Respire Blue. I personally have
sleep apnea, and I have been
using the Respire Blue device
nightly for the last two years.
Q. Whole You has recently
launched Respire Blue+. How
is this new dorsal fin device
different?
Patients with sleep apnea
and who are heavy bruxers,
like myself, require durabil-
ity to handle this functional
load. Therefore, durability is
of upmost importance when
I select a device for these
patients. Whole You Respire
Blue+ features a newly im-
proved 4-Wing design that
makes the device much stron-
ger compared to the original
Respire Blue.
The unique advantages of the
dorsal fin type Respire Blue+
make it my new go-to appli-
ance for my patients. Also, the
Whole You customer support
team at Respire Medical are a
pleasure to work with, which
makes everything so much
easier.
