Danish national parks
The first national park, located in Thy, was opened in August 2008, Mols Hills was opened in 2009 and the Wadden Sea opened in 2010. Currently, two other areas are nominated as national parks in Denmark: Skjern River and The North Zealand of the Kings. There are no formal routes, so these routes are suggested. Danish national parks are not protected, and the term national park in Denmark involve no additional protection of nature and environment, so the parks are free to use.
The Kings National Park
The park include two of the largest lakes in Denmark; Esrum Sea and Arresø. Both lakes are surrounded by abundant and varied bird life. The forest of Gribskov and Esrum Sø are embedded together in the North Zealand landscape as a natural core area. From historic times North Zealand has received special attention from the Danish kings. 70 km.
The Mols Hills
The landscape with its rolling hills was formed during the end of the latest ice age. Mols Hills only covers a smaller part of the national park. In total, the park covers about 180 km2. 105 km.
The Skjern Rivers
The area is characterised by the free dynamics of the riparian landscape, and the open heath landscape and bogs. The Skjern Rivers covers the largest natural re-establishment project in Northern Europe. 39 km.
Thy National Park
Located in the northern part of the National Park, more than 30 different species of bird breed, and at Agger Tange - in the southern part, is one of Northern Europe's most important resting areas for numerous flocks of water birds. 70 km.
Wadden Sea National Park
The park is one of the world's most valuable tidal areas. Wadden Sea significance as resting area for the millions of birds each spring and autumn migrate between the cold areas in the north and the warmer breeding areas in the south. 195 km.
