Habitat:

Occurs on site with moist soil in open forests, meadows and coastal areas. Native to western North America having been found in southwestern British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and California (Randall et al 1988).

Stems erect, hairy, and stout in lower portion, becoming thin above. Leaves lance-shaped, lobed and coarsely toothed, with spiny tips. Leaves covered with woolly hair, becoming less hairy with age, Basal leaves of the flowering season are 15 in. long. Flower heads of pink disk flowers held singly or clustered at branch ends; Bowl-shaped cups about 1", covered with webbed hairs; short spines at bract tips(Randall et al 1988).
