Marshes and Sloughs:
Freshwater marshes and sloughs are scattered throughout the Lake Earl and Lake Tolowa area. These areas are subject to flooding during periods of heavy winter rains. These types of habitats with their diverse plant habitats are vital to migrating bird species (Monroe et al, 1975). The more extensive mashes occur near the perimeters of Lake Earl and Lake Tolowa (Monroe et al, 1975). The smaller wetland areas are found in low places among the sand dunes and forests, the type of plants supported in these marshes are able to survive long periods without standing water (Monroe et al, 1975). Plant species associated with these habitats include pond weed, cat tails, bulrushes, and arrow-head (Monroe et al, 1975). Also, plants such as saltgrass, pickleweed, rush, silver weed, sedge and dock can be found (Monroe et al, 1975).
