Habitat:
Moist well drained soils from western British Columbia south to southern California. Elevation from sea level to 5,500 feet (Randall et al 1988).
A tree 40' to 100' feet tall and 2' to 4' in diameter. Leaves 6" to 12" palmately 5-lobed, dark green above and paler below. Flowers are small yellow borne on long racemes. Fruit double samar, wings 1 1/2" to 2" long. Bark smooth greyish brown on small trees and greyish brown to reddish brown with interlacking ridges and furrows on older trees (Randall et al 1988).
