M allorca to serve. Mid-June saw the inaugural WTA Mallorca Women’ s Open in Santa Ponsa, where some of the greatest names in the sport faced each other on centre court before moving on to Wimbledon. For Sabine Lisicki it was like coming home, as she loves to spend her holidays in Mallorca. Rumour has it that Angelique Kerber is in the process of looking for a home here, and after the tournament Ana Schweinsteiger, at the time still Ianović, was twice spotted enjoying a short holiday on the Island. The high level of attendance is certainly due in no small part to Mallorquin world-class player Rafael Nadal and his uncle Tony, who have created a major attraction for both visitors and players with the construction of their own Tennis Academy in Manacor, which opened this spring. Andy Murray, currently ranked number two in world, spent two weeks training at the new complex in June.
Back in 2015 Swedish hoteliers Mikael and Johanna Landstorm reopened the historic Palma Sport & Tennis Club in Mallorca’ s capital city. At the beginning of October it will host the Legends Cup, which will feature such famous players as Carlos Moyá, Mats Wilander, Henry Leconte and Carl-Uwe Steeb. With high-quality tournaments like these, tennis on the Island is certain to grow in importance. The events to be staged at these three new venues offer tourists and residents alike a range of world-class entertainment. For both professional sportsmen and women and ambitious amateurs they have created facilities offering first-class training opportunities. Who knows, perhaps this is where we shall see Boris Becker serving on a centre court once again.

Mitte Juni wurde in Santa Ponsa zum ersten Mal ein Mallorca Open der Damen ausgetragen, bei dem sich die großen Namen des Sports auf dem Centre Court gegenüberstanden, bevor es für sie weiterging nach Wimbledon. Für Sabine Lisicki war es ein Heimspiel, sie verbringt gerne ihre Ferien auf Mallorca. Angelique Kerber sucht gerade nach einem Zuhause hier, wie man hört, und Ana, damals noch Ivanović, heute Schweinsteiger, wurde auch nach dem Turnier bereits zweimal auf der Insel beim Kurzurlaub gesehen. Der hohe Besuch ist sicher zu einem großen Teil der Verdienst des mallorquinischen Weltklassespielers Rafael Nadal und seines Onkels Tony, die nicht nur mit dem Bau der eigenen Tennis Academy in Manacor, die im Frühjahr eröffnet worden war, einen attraktiven Anziehungspunkt für Besucher wie Spieler geschaffen haben. Der Brite Andy Murray, aktuell Nr. 2 der Weltrangliste, absolvierte im Juli ein zweiwöchiges Training in der neuen Anlage. Für Touristen und Residenten bieten die Events der drei neuen Anlagen abwechslungsreiche Unterhaltung auf Weltklasse-Niveau. Für Profisportler und ambitionierte Amateure wurde ein Umfeld geschaffen, das erstklassige Trainingsmöglichkeiten bietet. Wer weiß, vielleicht werden wir auch Boris Becker hier noch einmal auf einem Centre Court aufschlagen sehen.
