Southern Illinois Stone
Demonstrates Successful Teamwork
The first quarter of 2014 came roaring in with a wild
mix of extreme weather conditions which caused
a late start-up on the Delta’s Buncombe Quarry’s
production calendar. The auxiliary time was utilized as
the team at Southern Illinois Stone remained focused
on mine planning and training to prepare for the
approaching production season.
Employees at SIS worked together to compile
information and documents to submit to the Illinois
Association of Aggregate Producers (IAAP) for
consideration of the Safety Award. The hard work
resulted in SIS receiving the Gold Award for 2013 at
the IAAP’s annual convention in Springfield, Illinois.
Additionally, SIS was the recipient of the Community
Relations award at the convention. Greg Edwards
(Quarry Manager) states, “We are proud and honored
to be recognized by this organization [IAAP] and our
peers. It is always our goal to operate safely and be
an asset to the community we serve.”
Highway Funding Bill and urged employees to send
a short message to their Congressmen in support of
continuing funding.
In March, SIS began work on the construction of the
new north entrance to the Buncombe facility. The
new entrance will help to improve safety and traffic
flow while providing enhanced aesthetic appeal to the
community.
Once production resumed, SIS began accessing the
middle ledge of the quarry to reduce the amount of
overburden to be removed in 2014 while providing
material to process. The closer proximity of the middle
ledge to the primary crusher will also serve to enhance
efficiency and production goals set for 2014.
Greg Edwards and Pat Korte, (Aggregate Foreman)
, from SIS attended and completed IDOT Aggregate
Technician Certification, while Pat Korte attended the
Martin Engineering Foundations Class. In February,
both attended a two-day Supervisor training class.
The management team also obtained Arc Flash and
electrical training. In January, the annual Part 46
MSHA training and hearing tests were completed for
all plant employees. SIS is dedicated to maintaining a
highly-skilled and knowledgeable workforce.
Southern Illinois Stone held the 2014 Kick Off meeting
on March 24th which was attended by Rick Neubert
(President), Don Rosenbarger (Senior Vice President
of Operations), Dan Grier (Regional Manager), and
Scott Jinks (Regional Safety Coordinator) from the
corporate office. Each spoke briefly about the current
activities of Delta Companies, Inc., emphasizing
safety. Don Rosenbarger spoke regarding the
Williamsville
Stone’s 2014
Forecast Looks
Promising
Williamsville Stone resumed production in April after
completing its winter maintenance program that had
been delayed by the wet weather of February and
March. The winter maintenance program included
many processing plant repairs along with rebuilding
the processing plant’s tertiary crusher. In addition,
Williamsville Stone purchased a new 2014 Komatsu
WA500-7 front end loader. The new Komatsu loader
replaces a 2002 same model unit.
The forecast for 2014 shows promise based on
the many projects that are already underway or
scheduled to start this year. Projects include a
new Harps Food Store, Hampton Inn, Wal-Mart
Neighborhood Market, Southern Bank headquarters,
and First Midwest Bank headquarters. Upcoming
approved transportation projects in Poplar Bluff
include Oak Grove Road Phase II (Shelby Road
to Westwood Blvd), Oak Grove Road Phase III
(Township Line Road to Oak Grove School including
loop road around school), and Three River College
entrance off Shelby Road.
On April 8th, the Poplar Bluff citizens voted to
approve a $50 million dollar improvement plan that
will modernize and expand the capacity for the
entire school district. The anchor of the plan includes
moving the Senior High to the current 5th & 6th Grade
Center building. A major addition to the center will
feature science, technology, engineering and math
classrooms, plus a new athletic stadium. Grades
five and six will move to the present Senior High,
along with the fourth grade, which will be removed
from the current elementary grade configuration,
eliminating the need to make significant changes to
the neighborhood schools.
Southern Illinois Stone began providing additional
product to Short Brothers and Paschens for the
completion of the I-57 & Hwy 13 interchange due in
July of 2014, as well as providing materials to our
other valuable customers. SIS also began stockpiling
products that SIAC will need for their busy 2014
season.
Although the weather conditions during the first
quarter of 2014 were challenging, SIS continued to
plan and work toward production goals while training
personnel in preparation for the upcoming season.
“SIS finished the first quarter with no lost-time
accidents,” reports Greg Edwards, “And we wish to
thank all employees for helping to keep safety the
number one goal.”
