The “MAIN EVENT”
How do you top off an award-
winning year - by celebrating with
the honorees! EMBODI participants
held their End of Year program day
at The Main Event Entertainment
Center on April 13. The purpose of the program day was to facilitate team building
with the EMBODI participants, Sorors, and volunteers.
While at the Main Event, the program participants demonstrated their bowling
prowess while building camaraderie. However, it was survival of the fittest in a
friendly game of laser tag. Everyone came out with smiles, so laser tag was a
success! The final round on the EMBODI participants’s game pass was billiards. It
was great to witness the high school students assisting the younger members and
providing encouragement. We closed
out the program day with a wonderful
meal, recognition of our Super Senior
Carlton Gantt, as well as, recognition
of each program participant,
committee member, and volunteer.
EMBODI participants played hard at
the Main Event because they worked
hard throughout the year. The
expected outcome of the EMBODI
program was to measure the success
of our three program goals which were established at the beginning of the sororal
year. Those goals were as follows: Black in America, Financial Fortitude, and
Youthful Voices. These goals were accomplished by the young men developing their
video project of Positive Police Interaction, presenting the project at the Duval County
School Board public meetings, as well as, presenting at a community forum which
addressed gun violence in the African-American community. In contrast to their
video project, the students sat through numerous court cases deliberated by Soror
Judge Angela Cox and gleaned the importance of making good choices. It was
readily apparent that the offenders were predominately African-American males. Our
hope is that these collective experiences will change the trajectory of our program
participants’ lives.
