FOREWORD
2020 has proven to be a year for which there is no playbook.
From the human and economic toll of COVID-19 to justified civil unrest around
the world, the fault lines of our global society have been laid bare. It has been
heart-wrenching, but I believe that there is tremendous opportunity for a bright
future. I also believe that technology and Dell Technologies will play a critical role.
Without the massive investment in technology during the last decade, the
economic and social devastation we’re experiencing would be magnitudes of
order more profound. We wouldn’t be able to harness the power of data to
address the coronavirus pandemic through testing, tracing, and treatment.
We wouldn’t have the ability to pivot our economy to remote and virtual models.
Vital services—from finance and manufacturing to hospitals, schools, and
government—are still relentlessly fulfilling their missions. At my own company,
everyone from sales and support to engineers and designers now use video
conferencing and other collaboration tools to connect and work together in
new ways.
I’m optimistic we can use this year as a springboard to invest for the future
we want—to rebuild, reinvigorate, and reimagine our economy with solutions
like virtual classrooms, telemedicine, and remote working to help bridge the
socioeconomic divide. As a global society, we’ll decide how much of the crisis
response we want to carry forward into the recovery and beyond. Technology
can be a huge part of this, but the other even more important part is our
collective humanity.
I hope you enjoy these stories and that they bring inspiration for the digital
and the human transformation that’s possible.
