Sigmund Freud, who is considered the father of psychoanalysis stabilized that exist 3 levels which compound the personality. He named Ego, SuperEgo and ID.

The ego is the component of personality that is responsible for dealing with reality. The ego functions in the conscious, preconscious, and unconscious mind.

The superego is the aspect of personality that holds all of our internalized moral standards and ideals that we acquire from both parents and society.

The id is the only component of personality that is present from birth. This aspect of personality is entirely unconscious and includes of the instinctive and primitive behaviors.

Gordon Allport, his theory was based that every individual has a unique combination of personality traits. He stated that if we could determine someone’s personality traits, we could predict the individual’s behavior in several circumstances. He made 3 levels of traits.

Cardinal trait, These are traits that dominate an individual’s whole life

Central trait, These are the general characteristics that form the basic foundations of personality.

Secondary trait, These are the traits that are sometimes related to attitudes or preferences and often appear only in certain situations or under specific circumstances.
