2.6 Focused Feedback through Standards-Based Grading
Session Description: This presentation focuses on a high school math department that implemented a standards-based grading process for all students to provide targeted feedback on assessments in a school with a traditional grading paradigm. This change followed a grading reform initiative that focused on assessment and feedback for student learning rather than compliance and“ point accumulation.” The initiative is aligned to multiple Universal Design for Learning( UDL) guidelines related to feedback and reflection that aim to help students become independent learners. Some data from surveys of students and teachers are presented to showcase the effectiveness of the initiative to student learning.
Session Objectives: 1. Recognize that standards-based grading can be used to provide feedback that supports student learning and the development of independent learners. 2. Purposefully design for feedback that is aligned with UDL Guidelines through the implementation of a standards-based grading process. 3. Identify how standards-based grading can be implemented in a school with a traditional grading paradigm. 4. Describe the conditions under which standards-based grading is optimally implemented.
