Scrub Blazing Star Shrine Box 9” x 12” x 6” Mixed-media 2010 Mollie Doctrow 24 This Scrub Blazing Star Shrine Box is the prototype for the shrine boxes installed on the Wildflower Wayside Shrine Trail at South Florida State College and Archbold Biological Station. This trail honors the wildflowers of the Lake Wales Ridge in Central Florida. The Ridge has one of the highest concentrations of rare and endangered plants in the continental United States. The fragile and subtle beauty of the scrub habitat inspired this project. Some of these plants grow in the artist’s neighborhood, some are mowed down each summer. Slogging through swamps, wading through weeds, and getting off the beaten path inspire the woodcut prints and environmental projects of Mollie Doctrow. The woodcuts are portraits of plants and plant communities, some endemic, rare, and endangered. Working with scientists and others during residencies at Everglades National Park, Big Cypress Preserve, and Archbold Biological Station has inspired much of her recent work. Doctrow is the Curator at the South Florida State College Museum of Florida Art and Culture. [email protected] • www.doctrow.com Currently based in Sebring, Florida
