Aaron Hill grew up in California and lived in Rome, London, and New
York City, all noted urban environments that obscure the land. “Empty
City” is a series of long-exposure film photographs that use the
analog photographic process to erase a city’s inhabitants, congestion,
and noise, leaving the viewer to imagine what has been concealed. The
disconnect between the photograph and the world it represents
subverts photographic realism and draws attention to the role of the
viewer’s imagination. Hill lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts where he
studies at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
