More Than Meets the Eye:
A Gaviota Respite
The 2014 DEEP day at the beach.
Many years have ticked by since the day when I got a
phone call from writer and ranch owner Henry Schulte, asking
me if I would be into helping him start a new beach and ocean
themed publication with some of my photography.
I made the hop up coast to Rancho Dos Pueblos, and
the two of us sat down with a stack of files full of 35 mm
transparencies. We edited a brief cull and Henry told me that
he was actually studying to be a web master at UCSB at the

Wind blew, temps rose and fell, days passed and when
I talked to Pablo weeks later he said that we were cleared to
use the beach. That was five days prior to shooting. I have long
been able to forecast weather and swell with great accuracy. It
