Maximize Recovery: The Power of Consistency in Staying Active( Continued)
JUDD KOENIG
Bringing It Back to the Law
As lawyers, we know the power of steady effort. No case is won in a day. Success comes from consistent preparation, research, drafting, and advocacy. The same is true for our health. Just as you wouldn’ t expect to win a trial without months of preparation, you can’ t expect long-term health by jumping in and out of extreme routines.
Consistency doesn’ t just improve physical health; it maximizes recovery in every sense. Staying active improves focus, reduces stress, and helps us manage the daily pressures of our legal practice. It gives us more energy for our families, more focus and clarity for our clients, and more resilience when challenges arise.
Practical Ways to Build Consistency
If you’ re wondering how to apply this in your daily life, start small:
• Set a minimum standard. Decide that on your busiest days, you’ ll do at least 10 minutes of activity, regardless of what the activity is. That way, you never“ miss” or fall off course... you simply scale down.
• Redefine success. Count all movement as a win, whether it’ s a short walk, a stretch, or a few push-ups between emails.
• Use reminders. Subscribe to resources like Arnold’ s Pump Club for daily encouragement and add some type of movement to your daily calendar. Things that we add to our calendar have a much greater chance of getting completed.
• Focus on identity. Instead of saying,“ I’ m trying to get in shape,” tell yourself,“ I’ m the kind of person who moves every day.”
That identity sticks.
• Play the long game. Remember, it’ s not about how intense today’ s workout is. It’ s about what you’ ll sustain for weeks, months, and years.
Final Thought
Maximizing recovery doesn’ t mean chasing perfection or extremes. It means building the quiet and unglamorous discipline of consistency. By embracing small, sustainable actions, especially on the hard days, you create a lifestyle that endures.
In law, as in life, the steady, consistent effort is what ultimately wins. So lace up your shoes, take that 10-minute walk, and remind yourself: consistency is the key to maximizing recovery.
