Breed All About It !

Spotlight on : The French Bulldog

Description : Frenchies resemble Bulldogs , with the exception of their smaller size and large , bat-like ears . Its head is wrinkled , large , and square , its body compact and muscular . Their short , smooth fur varies in color from brindle to fawn to white , or combinations of brindle and white or fawn and white .
Temperament : French Bulldogs are one of the world ' s most popular small dog breeds . These little charmers are bright , affectionate , and playful . Very adaptable , Frenchies love people , and are good with children . They generally get along well with other animals , but can be a bit territorial . This breed does not bark a lot , but they are very alert , making them excellent watchdogs . Their entertaining , clownish behavior endears them to their owners . Frenchies love to be with family members all the time , and enjoy cuddling and sleeping on the couch . Compared to other breeds , grown Frenchies are relatively calm . They can be a bit stubborn , though , so early training and socialization is recommended . The Frenchie ' s small size makes it a good choice for living in apartments or small homes . They do not tolerate being left alone for too long , however , so if you travel or work long hours , Frenchies may not be the right breed for you .
Average Height / Weight : 11 - 13 inches in height ; approximately 16 to 28 pounds .
Health Issues : Like all flat-faced breeds , Frenchies are prone to breathing problems and do not tolerate hot or humid weather well . They can also be more susceptible to skin allergies and disorders , and eye conditions , such as cherry eye , juvenile cataracts , and entropion . One very important fact about French Bulldogs - because of their front-heavy structure , this breed cannot swim and should never be unattended when they are around a pool , tub , or other body of water .
Exercise : Frenchies don ' t require a lot of outdoor exercise . A short walk or play session should provide enough exercise to keep them in shape . Frenchies enjoy participating in canine sports , such as obedience and agility , but as a flat-faced breed prone to overheating , they should never be allowed to exert themselves in hot weather .
Life Expectancy : 10 - 12 years .
Grooming : Minimal shedders , a weekly brushing with a medium-bristle brush will suffice to keep your Frenchie looking its best . Their facial folds , though , should always be kept clean and dry .
