To me, a poem is like a shortened version of a larger story. Instead of reading an entire book, watching an entire movie, etc., you get the beginning, middle and end in a few stanzas or less. They all take some effort, but poetry, especially free verse, has been my favorite thing to write for 10+ years. But, as some of you may know, I don't like to stick to one particular style or only be able to do one thing. Sometimes I enjoy combing multiple elements to what I do.
I incorporate this style into many of my poems and song lyrics. I like being able to have the freedom to write the poem in a way I feel I can best get my message across to my audience. Especially if I wish to tell a story. I'm not a great artists when it comes to drawing, painting, etc. Hence why I like being able to paint a picture in others minds with my words.
My favorite free verse poem as of right now is Free (By Amy Ludwig VanDerwater). Her poem can be seen to the right. Though I've never been a refugee, I was still able to envision the story she was telling. I was able to somewhat feel what the child in the poem must have felt when going through those drastic changes in her life.
Without the constraint of having to imagine the forms of sound through meters instead of intonations, my creativity is able to flow a lot more naturally and freely. I don't have as many rules/requirements hindering me from writing the way I would wish to. Being able to say things the way I would wish to say them.
