It is the most wonderful time of the year! Not only is the restaurant scene sensational but all of the holiday themed entertainment is so accessible. Lineups and sellouts do occur but if you plan in advance you should be able to get in to any event, show or restaurant that you want to visit, which is not always the case in larger centres. We enjoy great variety, yet on a scale that makes it all very liveable. Check out our Holiday Calendar to see what I mean.

Every year it is exciting to see new places launch and emerge as new favourites. This issue we reveal our annual picks for Best New Restaurants. All were added to the already competitive environment between October 2014 and October 2015. We ate at all the new restaurants that opened this year- several times. It was year of fun settings, well executed themes and dishes reflecting passion and cultural diversity.
Five made the cut with their exciting presentations, local ingredients, and attention to detail, Our choice for the year’ s best new restaurant: The Merchant Kitchen. In a cool, fresh downtown space, it offers a new cuisine mash-up for Winnipeg with a menu that dances between Latin and Asian flavours.
This Special Holiday Issue highlights a food category that trends high for the season: cocktail party appetizers! Join us as we go in the kitchen with chef Bill Georgakopoulos at Rae and Jerry’ s for a look at how small bites have a big impact.
In ciao! cooks, two seasoned chefs, Michele Di Fonte of Monticchio and Edward Lam of Yujiro share recipes for sides that

will add multiculti flair to potluck parties.
Our it list offers a glimpse of some of those great finds from some of the city’ s best stores. It includes a directory of our favourite stores for reference throughout the year – a personal guide to encourage exploring!
This year, to sweeten the shopping experience even more, we collaborated with a group of local stores for the annual Ciao! Boutique Week. T h i s promotion is meant to encourage shopping in locally owned stores this holiday season. By shopping in participating boutiques you will enjoy loads of festive fun. In-store promotions, music and tasty treats are all designed to show customer appreciation and make spirits bright. In addition, Boutique Week shoppers will be entered into a draw for a grand prize shopping spree!
For those who are receiving this issue of Ciao! for the first time, and like what you read, see our website for digital issues or to subscribe throughout the year.
May our favourite places become yours in the year to come!
