When And How Are Benefits Paid
Again, banking details should be provided by completing Sections 1, 7, 8 (if you wish
to register for the Pension Password Service PPS) and 9 of the Beneficiary’s Form.
Payslips
A letter detailing the amounts and types of benefits will be sent by SYPA.
Widow’s/Widower’s/Surviving Civil Partner’s Pension
The initial pension will be paid as soon as possible. All following payments will be
paid monthly on the last banking day of that month.
Pension payments are made by direct credit into:
• a Bank account; or
• a Building Society account.
If you are entitled to a spouse’s/civil partner’s pension, you should indicate
your preferred method of payment by completing Sections 1 to 5 and Section 8 (if
you wish to register for the Pension Password Service PPS) of the Beneficiary’s
Form. If you are unsure about the banking information required, check with your
own bank or building society.
N.B Pension payments can only be made into an account of which the
spouse/civil partner is the sole or joint holder.
Most foreign banks will accept direct payment of pensions (contact SYPA to confirm
if your bank is one of them). If you would like your pension paid abroad, do not
complete Section 3 of the Beneficiary’s Form. Contact SYPA for a special bank form.
After producing your first payslip our payroll system will normally only
produce a payslip if your monthly net amount varies by more than £5 from
the previous month. You will receive a P60 in April which we are required,
by law, to issue for each Tax Year. You should keep this safe because,
although duplicate P60’s can be issued, a charge of £5 + VAT will be made
for each duplicate provided. In addition you may need it to provide evidence
of your income if you are claiming benefits.
Your pension will always be paid into your account every month whether you
receive a payslip or not.
Lump Sum Death Grant
If the deceased member had a valid nomination in force, SYPA will normally pay the
death grant direct to the nominee(s). SYPA may, in certain circumstances, however,
decide to pay some or all of the lump sum death grant to the estate.
Where all or part of the grant is to be paid to the estate, payment will be made as
soon as possible after the production of the legal documents proving entitlement to
the estate. These are known as:
• Grant of Probate of the Will; or
• Letters of Administration;
Children’s Pensions depending upon whether a Last Will and Testament exists; they are available from

If the child is: If the lump sum death grant amounts to less than £5,000 and neither the Grant of
Probate nor Letters of Administration are being obtained, payment will be made if a
claim is received from the personal representative.
• Under 18, payments are made to the child’s parent or guardian(s) who will be
required to sign the declaration in Section 6 of the Beneficiary’s Form, agreeing
that all money will be used for the sole benefit of that child.
• 18 or over, payments are made directly to the child.
