STRENGTH IN NUMBERS
Vital networks
Service user groups and recovery groups have become an important part of the
treatment landscape, providing essential peer support.
Peer support has been shown to increase the chances of long-term recovery
through offering friendship, support, information and encouragement.
The annual DDN national service user involvement conference in Birmingham
brings together groups from all over the country to network, share ideas and
campaign for fair drug and alcohol policy and treatment.
In recent years peer support has been used to build strong and vibrant recovery
communities, helping people maintain their recovery from addiction in their home
environment and offering many opportunities beyond treatment.
Changes UK was the idea of Steve Dixon, who was determined to set up an
independent social enterprise for people in recovery. It launched in 2016 to provide
support, volunteering opportunities and business incubation, with facilities including
a café, dry bar, and recording studios – and it hasn’t looked back.
Established in 1999 Holgate House is a family run unit, offering a 12-step
approach abstinence treatment approach, situated in a beautiful village
of Barrowford Lancashire, set in its own tranquil grounds. Perfect location
offering a holistic, person-centered treatment approach depending on
the individual needs i.e. substance misuse, addictive behaviours, grief,
childhood trauma, self-harm, and eating disorders.
‘There was a dream that one day we could run a totally peer-
led residential rehab facility… we’ve moved on to the point of
opening Warwickshire’s first residential rehab fully staffed by
people in recovery. Our structured programme now incorpor -
ates 12-step awareness, physical activities, yoga, meditation,
mindfulness, anger management and professional counselling
sessions. We have also developed a rolling family education and
awareness programme, which includes Adfam’s step approach.
We’ve gone from starting as a small peer-led support
organisation to opening an 11-bed fully staffed and supported
residential rehab – all achieved with people in recovery.’
