Be sure to plan a visit to Crazy Horse Memorial ® this fall! The Memorial is open year-round and upcoming events taking place are an excellent opportunity to find yourself inspired, educated, and amazed!
For our“ outdoorsy” friends, Mahkoche Kin( Lakota for ' The Land ') is an hour long walk through the woods of Crazy Horse Memorial ® with culture bearer Darrell Red Cloud( Lakota). This program is a perfect opportunity to get off the beaten path to enjoy nature while reflecting on the sacred Black Hills( Paha Sapa). This guided walk will be available on September 5th and 19th at 10AM and 2PM, weather permitting.
Keep your hiking boots out for the 13th autumn Volksmarch on Sunday, September 28th. The Crazy Horse Volksmarch( an organized hike) is a 5K or 10K( 6.2 or 3.1 miles round trip) woodlands walk to the world’ s largest Mountain Carving in progress! You will get an up-close look at the progress on the Mountain Carving and the amazing tools the Crew is using.
You will also want events inside the Visitor Center on your calendar to take part in hands-on activities and exciting performances. September 27th will be the 2nd Annual Honoring the Ta- tanka Day featuring performances and demonstrations centered upon the importance of the Tatanka( buffalo) to everyday life and culture from the perspective of the peoples of the plains.
The excitement continues into October with Native Americans’ Day on the 13th. The annual Native Americans’ Day Program at the Memorial will begin at 9:00am( instead of the usual 10:00am). Featuring musicians and guest speakers, the Program will last 60- minutes and culminate in the presentation of the Crazy Horse Memorial Educator of the Year Award.
In addition, this Native Americans’ Day, the Memorial will host South Dakota Symphony Orchestra( SDSO) for performances of their Lakota Music Project. The SDSO will be performing in the Welcome Center Theater and will take the stage twice that day with a 60-minute performance at 10:30am and a full 90-minute performance at 1:00pm. Furthermore, regional Native American artists will be conducting workshops throughout the day. All programming, including the SDSO Lakota Music Project performances, are included with admission to the Memorial. Visitors will also be served free Tatanka Stew while supplies last courtesy of Laughing Water Restaurant and Custer State Park.
