Native American Heritage Month
Crazy Horse Memorial ® will be hosting many exciting opportunities for Black Hills residents to celebrate , enjoy , and learn about Lakota cultural heritage this November .
AAll of the educational , interactive , and entertaining programs are included with admission to the Memorial . Beginning on Friday , November 1 , Iris Sully , Sicangu Lakota doll maker and bead worker , will be joining the Memorial as Artist in Residence . Iris will be working within a public studio space in the Wall of Windows until November 15 and visitors are encouraged to stop by and visit with her or watch her process . Working hours will vary in the studio but her artwork will continually be on display for visitors to see .
Performances will be held at the Memorial on November 2 , 3 , and 10 at 11:00am and 2:00pm . Performance locations within the Memorial are dependent on weather , but visitors can expect fun , educational , and interactive performance aspects during all show times .
Crazy Horse Memorial will also be partnering with The Journey Museum to host Lakota star knowledge programs within an inflatable planetarium on November 2 , 3 , 9 , and 10 . Presenters will include Journey Museum Education Manager Andy Thimgan and local Lakota culture bearer and artist Mike Lammers . Programs will take place throughout each day and reservations are not required .
The Memorial will also host a youth coloring contest in which children up to the age of 13 can color their own baskets . The contest will be judged , and prizes will be given to first and second place winners in two separate categories . Visitor Services staff will be hosting a variety of hands-on activities / crafts Monday through Friday . These activities are first come / first serve and reservations are not required . Staff will also be conducting the Native American Veterans Honoring Ceremony on Veterans Day , November 11 , at 11:00am and 2:00pm .
All Native American Heritage Month programs are included with admission to the Memorial and we hope that you are able to celebrate with us ! The Memorial is open yearround , however , and we always welcome you to celebrate Native American heritage outside of the month of November .
