Under a timbered and rocky ridge on the outskirts of Custer State Park, a small herd of buffalo grazed and snoozed in the unseasonably warm springtime weather. Their heavy, sloped backs, under thick winter wool, not quite shed out, soaked up the sun. A few green sprigs of grass poked up between last year’ s dried stems, and the spiny globes of coneflower heads suggested the color the landscape could have in the summertime.
