and mirth
row , bowls of bread dough proofing on the counter , balls of butter ready to be cut into flour for a pie crust , which will then be filled with plums or apples or pumpkin . It is a culmination of all that the year has been – The work , the colors , the tastes , the joys and sorrows , successes and failures , all culminate in this last two months of merrymaking and mirth .
And underpinning all of this is the poignance of a time of Thanksgiving propelling us into a season of waiting and rejoicing . There is the warming of the heart and the enlivening of the soul when we remember the most important thing , that Child in a manger some 2000 years ago . Familiar songs move the heart . Familiar readings and the lighting of candles infuse the season with reverence and joyful awe . The singing of the angels is brought to mind in our carols and hymns , and the rejoicing of the lowly shepherds is reflected in our own cheer ; the bright candles bring to mind a certain miraculous Star , and our humble gift-giving reflects in a small way the kingly gifts presented to the King of Kings .
So while the outside world is winding down , the inside world is winding up , because we have two months of merrymaking , two months of mirth , before the winter really sets in . Two months of festivity before we accept winter ’ s isolation . Two months of gifting and feasting , before we truly taste the wintertime . Two months of sharing and celebrating . Two months of gathering together , family with family , before we gather inward , household by household , to wait out the wintertime .
