What started out as a relatively small local event to help people in the Black Hills process the loss of their beloved forest due to a widespread infestation of mountain pine beetles has grown into quite the phenomenon : hundreds of people now march through the quiet streets of Custer each January , flaming torches in hand , to reach a giant effigy of the mountain pine beetle and deliver a fiery vengeance .
