The recent terror attack outside Westminster which left four innocent people dead ( at time of writing ) and many more injured , was yet another reminder , as if one were needed , that we face an ongoing battle against evil . Whether it is a ‘ lone wolf ’ attack , or something bigger , the motive clearly remains the same : To spread fear and hate amongst us . While we do our best to carry on as normal , showing defiance by not allowing these attacks to affect our daily lives , we still must acknowledge the fact that large terrorist groups are sophisticated organisations , their methods complex , and it is a struggle to stay ahead of them . In addition to street level atrocities , like those in London , Berlin and Paris , cyber warfare cannot be ignored either . In February the Queen opened the new National Cyber Security Centre - part of intelligence agency GCHQ – the development of which is hopefully a huge step forward in the mission to make the UK a safer place to live . I attended a seminar by GCHQ staff members at Data Centre World in London and we will hopefully be hearing more from them at DCN in the future .

Another seminar I was glad to attend at Data Centre World was a panel discussion on ‘ Women Leaders in Technology ’. Moderated by Computer Weekly ’ s business editor Clare McDonald , it featured insightful input from Alejandra Leon Moreno from Philips IT , Sue Daley of TechUK and Susanne Chishti , CEO and founder of Fintech Circle . While it was encouraging to listen to their stories and background it was also concerning to learn some of the prejudice that obviously still exists in our sector . If you have any views or experiences ( positive or negative ) we at DCN would like to hear from you .
Software and Applications is the feature of choice in this month ’ s issue , with detailed contributions from ManageEngine , Bitglass , WWT , Romonet , Red Hat and LDeX Group . We also speak to Gaurav Dhillion , CEO of SnapLogic , in the Meet Me Room ( page 16 ), who explains how an early interest in technology started him off on his career path as a tech entrepreneur , and Rittal ’ s Clive Partridge delivers the Final Thought this month on page 48 .
