SOFT AND STEADY

Bruce Gray , senior business development manager at World Wide Technology , examines the role software plays in data centre energy efficiency .

Data centre energy efficiency has long been a priority as regulation and cost impel CIOs to bring down PUE ratings to the lowest possible level . For example , the US government has put a mandate in place to reduce the PUE of all federal data centres to 1.4 and the European Union has implemented a code of conduct to encourage energy efficient practices .

Data centres are the backbone of the modern economy and due to the explosion of digital content they are the fastest growing electricity user in developed countries . Back in 2014 , US data centres alone consumed an estimated 91 billion kilowatthours of electricity and by 2020 this is projected to increase to 140 billion kilowatt-hours . In 2015 , data centres worldwide used more electricity than the total power consumption of the UK over the same period .
With this projected growth and the demand for IT managers to be more efficient in their use of IT assets , software will be an important tool to achieve results . Energy efficiency is reliant on a wide range of factors at both infrastructure and software level and money should not
