In last month ’ s column I referred to the UK General Election , with the hope that whoever won would get a firmer grip on the issue of cyber security . Well , with the country unable to decide ( clearly at least ) who it would like in power , we are left with two parties trying to claim victory in equal measure - but without any real justification . At the time of writing it looks increasingly likely that the Conservatives will form a coalition government with the DUP , but Labour are hovering with the hope of creating a ‘ rainbow coalition ’ should the negotiations collapse . Either that or it ’ s back to the polling stations ! Despite its undoubtedly high importance , recent tragic events – such as the Borough Market and Finsbury Park terror attacks , as well as the Grenfell Tower fire – have forced the issue of cyber security sideways . Unfortunately , all we seem to read or hear about is who is to blame , as the country lurches from one disaster to another – and very little about who is going to take on the responsibility of making things better for the future . Among all this of course is what supposedly triggered Theresa May ’ s decision to call an election – Brexit ! Despite the initial panic

that followed the referendum last year , business has ticked along as normal and I am glad to report there still seems to be a lot of positivity around the data centre market particularly from London ’ s perspective . The general view it seems is that London is still ‘ the place to be ’ and it ’ s not going anywhere and never will , Brexit or no Brexit .
Our special feature this month focuses on some of my favourite topics – Big Data and the Internet of Things . Across five articles , written by some of the industry ’ s leading experts , we delve into the opportunities and areas where Big Data and IoT can really make a difference to our future , from smart cities to sporting prowess , as well as assessing the infrastructure required to make it work .
* On an end note this will be my final issue as editor of DCN . Having worked on the title for five years , during which time I have seen exciting progress in all sectors of the data centre industry , I am moving on to new challenges . I would like to thank all the loyal readers and contributors that have made my time here such an enjoyable experience .
