Welcome to the first DCN of 2017 , and a happy new year to you all . Shortly before Christmas Google confirmed that it will hit its target of offsetting 100 per cent of the energy used at its data centres and offices against power from renewable sources .

The firm first made the commitment in 2015 to go 100 per cent renewable by 2017 . This is to be applauded of course and it is only right that the world ’ s biggest organisations set the bar for others to follow when it comes to tackling climate change . Although Google still uses fossil fuels , it now buys enough electricity from renewable sources to offset energy use at the data centres and offices . The tax incentives currently on offer means hitting such targets is highly beneficial . But with Donald Trump ’ s arrival at the White House imminent , and his somewhat dismissive past views on climate change , the future significance of these tax benefits is unclear . However , what Mr Trump promises and what he actually succeeds in doing are likely to be two very different things ( when does the building of that wall start ?!). We must hope , though , that whatever happens , and under whichever leadership , giants like Google continue with their commitment to helping the planet .
In this issue of DCN , Terry Greer-King of Cisco reflects on the UK government ’ s Autumn Statement and highlights the need for a focus on cyber security ( Centre of Attention , page 10 . Cybercrime is a continuing and growing problem yet its threat is still being underestimated ( Industry News page 6 ). While we might worry that we ’ ve left the back door unlocked when we ’ re on our way to work , the threat posed by online hacking still does not receive the attention it requires . A series of recent television adverts highlighting the dangers might eventually drift into the public consciousness . It does seem strange that with so much past distrust over things we can ’ t see , ‘ the cloud ’ for example , we are surprisingly complacent when it comes to crime we can ’ t see .
