78 per cent of data centres aren ’ t compliant with best practice ASHRAE thermal guidelines

According to new research from EkkoSense , almost eight out of ten UK data centres are currently non-compliant with recent ASHRAE Thermal Guidelines for Data Processing Environments .
EkkoSense recently analysed some 128 UK data centre halls and over 16,500 IT equipment racks – the industry ’ s largest and most accurate survey into data centre cooling – to reveal that 78 per cent of UK data centres currently aren ’ t compliant with current practice ASHRAE thermal guidelines .
The ASHRAE standard – published in the organisation ’ s ‘ Thermal Guidelines for Data Processing Environments – 4th Edition ’ – is highly regarded as a best practice thermal guide for data centre operators , offering clear recommendations for effective data centre temperature testing . ASHRAE suggests that simply positioning temperature sensors on data centre columns and walls is no longer enough , and that data centre operators should – as a minimum – be collecting temperature data from at least one point every 3m to 9m of rack aisle . ASHRAE also suggests that unless components have their own dedicated thermal sensors , there ’ s realistically no way to stay within target thermal limits .
This latest EkkoSense research follows on from recent findings that suggested the current average cooling utilisation level for UK data centres is just 34 per cent .

GTT Showcases Emergency Vehicle Preemption Solution and Analytics at Fire-Rescue International 2017

At this year ’ s Fire-Rescue International ( FRI ) event in north Carolina , Global Traffic Technologies , LLC ( GTT ) staff have discussed how Opticom Emergency Vehicle Preemption ( EVP ) and a new analytics tool can help reduce response times and increase safety for fire departments .
GTT delegates demonstrated how fire departments can harness data related to their emergency response trips and use it to make operational improvements .
Opticom Analytics is a new software tool which helps departments assess intersection performance , reveal problem areas and make corrections to provide a faster , safer emergency response . Data logs from the vehicle equipment are securely uploaded to the analytics platform via a Wi-Fi or cellular connection .
The information is then compiled into a web-based application that can be accessed anywhere with an internet connection . Users can sort and view performance metrics based on date , speed , travel time , vehicle type , preemption usage and more , and can consequently make adjustments to improve operational productivity and response performance .
GTT ’ s Opticom EVP system works alongside intersection controllers to help ensure emergency vehicles can move through intersections rapidly and without incident . When an emergency vehicle needs to navigate an intersection , the Opticom system on-board the vehicle sends a request to the intersection ’ s controller ahead of its arrival , which requests a green light , clearing a path to enable the vehicle ’ s expedited passage .
