Follow these sun safet y tips to help make your visit to New Smyrna Beach more enjoyable... Many of the visitors to our beautiful beach are not aware of how quickly the “Florida Sun” can burn the skin and ruin your vacation. Even on a cloudy day the ultraviolet rays penetrate cloud cover and sunburn can occur without being noticed. Take these tips from the American Cancer Society on protecting your skin... • Avoid repeated overexposure to the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The sun’s rays are strongest between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Repeated sunburns are particularly risky. • Use a sunscreen preparation to absorb ultraviolet rays, or use a sunblock that will deflect ultraviolet rays. Sunscreens are generally rated with and SPF (Sun Protection Factor) from 15 to 70, an 30 SPF or higher is recommended. Sunscreen should be applied at least an hour before going into the sun and frequently after swimming or heavy perspiration. • Wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeve shirts and wide-brimmed hats. • Avoid sun reflectors, which expose the delicate facial areas and underneath the chin. • Don’t use indoor sunlamps, tanning parlors or tanning pills. • Be aware that you can get burned on a cloudy day and the sun’s rays can reach down into three feet of water. Be cautious at high altitudes where there is less atmosphere to filter out the ultraviolet rays. Sand reflects the sun’s rays. • Do monthly self-examination of your skin to note any moles, blemishes or birthmarks. If you notice any changes in size, shape or color or if a sore does not heal, see a physician without delay. 20
