YOUR WORD for 2016 YOU REACH YOUR HAND INTO THE BAG and pull out a jumble of letters: L S O C F E U. Now what words can we possibly make of all these? How do they connect to make something new? How can we fit this new word into the allotted space? Have you ever felt like life is a game of Scrabble? We are handed an assortment of seemingly disconnected pieces, and then asked to make something meaningful? As we mark off those last few blocks of Gregorian time slots, we are filled with energy and anticipation as we hang up the crisp, new calendar. But often, all of that enthusiasm burns out after the first month or so, and we’re back to where we started. Being members of a task-oriented society, we want to have clear direction about where we are headed, and what we are to be doing. We need to know what is expected of us, and how we will accomplish the task. I would like to offer up a way of doing just that, though we aren’t going to make a list of New Year’s resolutions. It all begins with: One word. But I can’t tell you what that one word is. You see, that is something you will have to explore for yourself. This “one word” will be unique to you. This is about discovering what it is that God wants 9
