MORNING WORSHIP
SONGS AND PRACTICES TO USHER IN THE DAY
M
y quiet time is usually at night
since there are less distractions
and it’s quieter. So in the morning
I sometimes grab any one of the Sarah
Young or Mrs. Cowman devotionals that
hide out by my bed, to have something to
feast on first thing. A long time ago, before
the blankets come off and feet hit the floor
running, I started a habit of telling the Lord
“Good morning” as soon as I wake up, and
taking a minute to lay there and be still. Just
as a way of offering thanksgiving and praise
for the new day, and turning the focus onto
the reality of His continual presence. A
morning hymn that has long been a favorite
of mine is “Still, Still With Thee” by Harriet
Beecher Stowe.

Still, still with Thee, when purple morning breaketh,
When the bird waketh and the shadows flee;
Fairer than morning, lovelier than the daylight
Dawns the sweet consciousness, I am with Thee.
Alone with Thee amid the mystic shadows,
The solemn hush of nature newly born;
Alone with Thee in breathless adoration,
In the calm dew and freshness of the morn.
When sinks the soul subdued by toil to slumber,
Its closing eye looks up to Thee in prayer;
Sweet the repose beneath Thy wings o’ershading
