mINistryFOCUS An interview with Crystal Gingerich, volunteer. HILLCREST nursing home Harrison, AK Q. WHEN WAS HILLCREST FOUNDED. AND WHY? A: It was founded in 1953 to fill the need of a rest home for the elderly who needed a place to live. Q. WHAT IS THE VISION OF THE MINISTRY? A. The vision of Hillcrest was to provide a place for youth to ‘serve Christ by serving others’. Q. DESCRIBE A FEW OF HILLCREST’S PROGRAMS: A. Some of the main programs/outworkings of the ministry are the Christian Growth Program Wednesday evenings, an outreach activity once or so a month, and the nursing program that is provided by Hillcrest, to name a few. Q. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU HAVE FACED DURING YOUR TIME AT HILLCREST? A. Some of the bigger challenges I’ve faced are learning to be flexible with my work schedule, as well as people and personalities. Living so far from home wasn’t as major, but an adjustment because i couldn’t just leave whenever and do what i wanted. I’ve learned the importance of unselfishness as well! There is also a constant change in staff throughout ones term of service. Q. HOW CAN OTHERS BECOME INVOLVED? A. You can become involved by praying, being open to what God has for your life, and helping recruit staff, as Hillcrest has a steady turnover of staff. Hillcrest always has openings for certified nursing assistants, kitchen workers, homemakers, and maintenance men.
