Daniel mentioned something about suffering in his ropes . “ This is the aim and essence of semenawa . Shibari is more about suffering and pleasure in vulnerability than knots . This is a path for pleasure and letting go . Rhythm , time , contemplation , are part of it .” Suffering is , in fact , the beauty of his work .
Daniel ’ s camerawork also employs a certain minimal style . He keeps his backgrounds simple and often starkly shadowed . His lighting is sparse , often enhanced by color filters in order to the render his subjects in the same way that a sketch artist might work , often making his subjects more like abstractions than real people . The overall style is gritty , almost pornographic , except it is so well done . He carefully composes each frame in a way somewhat reminiscent of American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe .
And if you are thinking about modeling , being objectified , like this , and brave enough to try , good luck ! Expect to be tied in cruel , undignified , and terribly uncompromising positions , positions which only a sadist would try . Expect your suffering and your total surrender , will no doubt , become an integral part of the photo session and part of his art .
One special model and muse , well worth the mention is TatiAna Tallhya who seems to embody the spirit of his intent . Actually Daniel is looking for a few female models ( unpaid ) over time as part of a Shibari-oriented series , something , I am sure , we would all like to see .
