“Some people get wet, while
others feel the rain!”
By Safiya Campbell
Okay so I’m walking on 125th
street toward the subway
happy to have ended a hectic
Ebola centered workweek,
sipping on my green juice
and carrying my veggie burger and dessert while Damien
Marley educates me through
my ear buds when I turn the
corner. I notice a small crowd
but kept walking when I
heard someone utter “he’s
dead” rather matter of factly.
So I continued on my journey
until the crowd parted just
enough for me to see what
appeared to be a Hispanic

winter / September 2012
male in his mid to late 50s
unresponsive on the concrete.
As the bag containing my
just made veggie burger and
fries brushed my leg I could
feel the warmth which made
me think ‘damn man I’m
hungry and want to seep my
teeth into my sandwich!’ But
I didn’t. Instead I reluctantly
walked toward the crowd. ‘Is
he really dead?’ I pondered.
Quickly assessing the busy
scene, a man was calling
911, about 4-5 people who
appeared to be users chatted
seemingly emotionless as the
possible deceased laid within
feet of them, while pedestrians just keep it moving. The
victim who I quickly assumed
he might have overdosed
looked disheveled and not
clean enough for me to
perform mouth to mouth. The
only thing that my mouth
wanted was my veggie burger
and fries and cake from Uptown Juice Bar!!! But I went
over anyway. I approached
him to check for a pulse not
thinking what I would do beyond that. I went to check for
a radial pulse as his arm laid
lymph. His head position was
awkward and I didn’t really
want to move him to check
for a carotid pulse. Then I noticed his abdomen rise! And
again. He’s not dead! I think
my burger is still warm. So I
grabbed for my hand sanitizer and put my straw in my
mouth and took a long sip of
that green concoction mixed
with cayenne pepper. Not
waiting for EMT to arrive. Just
another day in Harlem... Smh.
That concludes this week of
Saf in the City. Stay tuned for
next week’s adventure.
