Dairyland Peach Business Profile 2019, Page 16 Long Prairie Lumber is one-stop shop for construction needs There has been a lumberyard on the site of Long Prairie Lumber since the 1970s. When the Miller brothers, Ray, Dave, Steve and Lee took it over in May 2014, it received a refurbishment that bright- ened up the space and stocked the shelves. All four brothers own the business, but Ray and Lee manage it. “We four brothers were in construction for many years, started by our dad,” Ray said. “But it’s not as fun to climb around on roofs anymore. We hope to build up the lumberyard to the point where we could turn off the construction side of the business.” “Our primary reason for buying the business was because of age,” Lee said. “I miss the outdoor part of it, but you do what you have to do to keep things rolling.” In five years, the Millers have built up the business. The ceiling and lighting inside the store was redone and the walls were painted, giving the space bright light. One of the next projects on the agenda is to update the exterior. “We knew it would be a big task to get the local community to come in and buy local again,” Lee said. The basic services offered at Long Prairie Lumber include drafting and in-house printing of blueprints, which are free with the purchase of materials. At the shop, customers can look at 3-D views of their proj- ects. Delivery of materials is free. “We do a lot of ag-related post frame buildings,” Ray said. There is glass cutting and screen repair. A boom truck is available to place shingles on building roofs. There is also a skid steer with auger and a telehandler with telescopic boom. After-hour services are available. Some of the many materials and building supplies Since taking over the business in 2014, the Miller bothers have refurbished the interior of Long Prairie Lumber to make it a bright place to work. There are a number of foundation and concrete products for various building needs. These products include insulated concrete forms, concrete blocks, mortar and Sakrete, rebar, waterproofing membrane, and more. One of the newest items to be added to the inven- tory is Fusion laminate flooring. “It’s all vinyl and is great for places like basements and bathrooms,” Ray said. There is composite and PVC decking, aluminum and vinyl railings. For siding, customers can choose from vinyl, steel, wood and LP Smartside (which is OSB using a special glue and coating with a 50-year warranty.) Stone veneer by Adorn and Waypost is available. Shelves are stocked with GRK screws and tools by Irwin, Stanley, DeWalt and National. Cabinets are by Woodland Custom Cabinets. “We strive to carry quality materials,” Lee said. “What we don’t stock, we can get in short order.” Most recently, the Millers started up a rental divi- sion for tools and equipment. It’s something the com- munity has been lacking. “There hasn’t been a rental business in Long Prai- rie for five years,” Lee said. “We’ll be adding to the in- ventory each year. Right now, we have a power wash- er, several types of nail guns, concrete tools, pressure washer, floor buffing machine, scaffolding, a drywall lift and insulation blower, to name a few.” The Miller brothers are happy with the progress they’ve made in the past five years. “We’re not trying to get real big,” Lee said. “We want to stay a business for the local community.” Long Prairie Lumber is located at 102 First Ave. SW in Long Prairie.
