" Ukraine : Lessons learned (?) concerning European Defense Industry "
For decades , Europeans spoke of their peace dividend , a welcome freeing-up of money that seemed no longer needed for defence but could now be spent on pleasanter and more productive uses . Since Russia invaded Ukraine , all that should have changed . The picture across the continent when it comes to actually putting money where mouths are is still patchy . Of course , Greece and Cyprus didn ’ t have to wait till Russia invasion in Ukraine to get alarmed . Due to common threat of Turkey , we are spending for the last decades over and above the NATO standard but that is not enough for the European Deffence Industry . We believe that this invasion has given Europe a collective shock . NATO has renewed energy and purpose . Defence budgets are starting to rise but the test will be how long this sense of urgency will endure . So , we propose to increase the joint European Defence Projects not only in the field of RnD but most important to the JOINT Development and Procurement of the Defence Systems that Europe will develop to together with our allies . Strong Defence Industry means strong Defence Forces and that is the only way to secure our societies our common European democratic values .
