Mr George Georgiou

Mr. GEORGHIOU was appointed as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence in April, 2018.
He holds a BSc in Economics & Statistics and an MSc in Operational Research from the University of
Southampton, UK.
Mr. GEORGHIOU has, throughout his career, served in various posts in the Directorate General for European
Programmes, Coordination and Development (DG EPCD) (formerly Planning Bureau) and has a vast experience
in areas such as macroeconomic policy, research and innovation, regional development, environment,
agriculture and fisheries, external international relations and management of EU funds.
He served as Permanent Secretary of the Directorate General for European Programmes, Coordination and
Development for 8 years.
Mr. GEORGHIOU was Secretary to the Council of Ministers for the period between May 2009 and March 2013,
while also serving as Permanent Secretary in DG EPCD. He was, as Permanent Secretary of DG EPCD, Chairman
of the Board of Directors of the Research Promotion Foundation and member of the Game and Fauna Services
Committee. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Cyprus Institute and Chairman of the
Committee of the Cyprus Innovation Award of Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation.
Mr. GEORGHIOU has also been a member of the Board of Directors of Cyprus Airways (for almost a decade),
Eurocypria (a chartered airline), member of the Board of Kaimakli Cooperative Bank and member of the Board
of the Human Resources Development Authority.
