Dr. Theodoulos Mesimeris Head of Climate and Energy Unit, Department of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development & Environment T: + 357 22 408948 M: + 357 99 429101 E: [email protected] Dr. Mesimeris is a Senior Environment Officer and head of Climate Action and Energy Unit at the Department of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment. Theodoulos holds a Chemical Engineering PhD from the National Technical University of Athens (2010). He also holds two MSc, one in Environmental Management from the European Association for Environmental Management Education and the other in Chemical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens. His BEng was also in Chemical Engineering (the National Technical University of Athens, 1995). During Cyprus’ presidency of the European Union (2012), he chaired the European Working Party for International Environmental Issues on Climate Change. He has also participated in a number of private, governmental and European projects related to climate change and energy issues. As head of the Climate Action and Energy Unit he is: - Implementing Cyprus’ climate, energy and environmental policy, - Participating in processes for the harmonization of Cyprus with the European Union in the fields of climate change, energy and environment Coordinating activities and programmes related to climate change, energy and the protection of the environment Theodoulos has participate in national, regional and international conventions, committess and conferences related to climate change and environmenta, and actively contributed to environmental awareness-raising, sensitization and education of the public. Dr. Mesimeris has played an important role in the promotion of new legislation for climate change and environmental protection. "Environmental Legal Framework of the Oil & Gas Sector in Cyprus" To achieve the goals of the framework of legislation and to protect the environment here in Cyprus, we need to ensure that the best available techniques, environmentally effective and economically appropriate tools are used in daily activities, assisted by: the Government’s staffing and expertise, studying further and in co-operation with other Mediterranean countries all technical parameters dealing with offshore activities, ● establishing a National Monitoring System to be in a position to monitor regularly the installations and the impacts of the activities on the environment, ● have the appropriate technical equipment, ● invest in knowledge and ● always remember that significant accidents caused by Offshore activities could have long term effects for the fragile ecosystems and biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea and coast due to its enclosed nature and special hydrodynamics as well as negative effects on the economies of the Mediterranean coastal States. ● ●
