"Natural Gas - Opportunity for Development and Cooperation in our Area"
Although the volumes of Gas discovered in our area, till now, are not a global game changer, potential
resources could well boost the economies of the host countries and provide respectable gas volumes to the
EU. The discoveries also have the potential to promote regional stability through economic cooperation,
creating the conditions and opportunities under which natural gas may reach European markets. Developing
NG is not the only evolution as such, for the needs of the power generation, but an opportunity and challenge
managing to transfer the benefits in various fields of the economy and development of the country, building in
that way a strong foundation for the future. PCI’s, Projects of Common Interest, can create thousands of new
work places for young scientists, engineers & technicians. This is development of the Euro Asia Interconnector,
the East Med Pipeline, the Cyprus Gas2EU project and the Cyprus liquefaction Onshore Terminal.
Although Renewable Energy Sources are a big challenge, in combination with Natural Gas is the evolution that
will change World. ‘The future of the world on ENERGY depends on NG and the SUN ‘prof. Ernest Moritz from
MIT’ stated few years ago. In Cyprus we have both, added. The evolution of Energy sector in Cyprus could be
rapidly developed by ensuring the energy supply with sufficient quantities of NG, and the protection of the
environment. This trilogy is the challenge covered by the development of the Energy Efficiency and the
discovery of sufficient NG quantities in the eastern Mediterranean area. The combination of the Energy
Efficiency, Renewable energy sources, NG and smart infrastructure (smart grids etc.) is the real receipt. NG can
be developed in combination with Renewable Energy Sources, Smart infrastructure, in the Industry, Energy
Efficiency and Transport. This is the enormous opportunity for Cyprus and the eastern Mediterranean Area.
What do we need? The political will!
